ASE Certified Technicians

Until the early 1970s, consumers had no way to distinguish between incompetent and competent mechanics. In response to this need, the independent, non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) was established in 1972.

ASE’s mission is to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service through the testing and certification of repair and service professionals.

There are eight ASE Automobile & Light Truck Certifications:

  • Engine Repair
  • Automatic Transmission
  • Manual Drive Train & Axles
  • Suspension & Steering
  • Brakes
  • Electrical Systems
  • Heating & Air Conditioning
  • Engine Performance

Here’s how ASE certification works: Prospective candidates register to take one or more of ASE’s exams. Upon passing, and after providing proof of two years of relevant work experience, the applicant becomes ASE certified—in that specialty. Certification is not for life. To remain certified, those with ASE credentials must be retested every five years.

ASE tests are written by experts in the subject matter of each specific test. These experts represent a national cross-section of the motor vehicle service industry, including working technicians, training reps from auto manufacturers and the aftermarket, customer service professionals, and educators.

The tests are administered by ACT (American College Testing), the leading US college admissions testing company .The exams are 1-2 hours long and stress knowledge of job-related skills. They are no cinch to pass: approximately one out of three test takers fails.

Master Technician Certification is earned after all eight of the certifications listed above are passed. To maintain the Master Level, all eight tests must be re-certified every five years.

Advanced Engine Performance Specialist Certification: This difficult 2 hour test is focused on the diagnosis of general power-train, computerized power-train controls (including OBD II), ignition systems, fuel and air induction systems, emission control systems, and I/M test failures. These technicians must also retest every five years to retain their Advanced Level certificate: Engine Performance Specialist.

These Technicians possess knowledge and the skills required to diagnose sophisticated drivability and emissions-related problems on automobiles, SUVs, and light-duty trucks.

You benefit from ASE certification. It is a valuable yardstick by which to measure the knowledge and skills of individual technicians as well as the commitment to quality of the repair facility employing ASE certified professionals.
